Sometimes the universe delivers EXACTLY what we ask for, in a way that feels like exactly what we don’t want.

This can make it very difficult to see and feel that you’re being supported. I promise, you’re ALWAYS being supported. When it feels like things aren’t going your way, you have to stop and be honest about where you’re blocking the flow. Oftentimes, these blocks come from the fact that we don’t realize we’re being given exactly what we asked for… exactly the way we need it. The universe (or god, goddess… whatever suits you) isn’t a magic genie where your wish is it’s command. It will 100% support you in creating a life you love by giving you the challenges, experiences, tools, skills and relationships you NEED in order to get to where you want to go. Sure, it would feel better if you just got the awesome job, right? If prince charming just showed up at your door already?

Probably… but think about this:

You might not be the person you need to be in order to really thrive in that job, relationship or experience without going through something else FIRST.

If you’re crystal clear about what you want and taking constant action towards making it happen, but the universe consistently presents you with something you’re resisting, it’s time to lean into it and uncover what it is you need to learn, gain, experience or work through. Sometimes the things you’re resisting are a necessary part of the journey and you’re not going to get there if you continue to push back. Sometimes opportunities and connections we need aren’t where we think we’re going to find them. Sometimes we need to be in challenging relationships or jobs to get clearer on what we do want, learn about ourselves and grow in ways we never would otherwise.

1) Look for the lesson or the gift.

If you’re being presented with a challenge or something other than what you wanted, learn to look for the lesson or the gift. What can be learned or gained from the situation or relationship? Where do you need to grow? How can you be of better service, show up more fully, or learn to be more compassionate? What tools are you gaining? There is ALWAYS a lesson and gift in every situation. Find it.

2) Stop resisting and start moving with the flow.

Releasing your resistance doesn’t mean that you can’t continue going after what you want, it means that you’re allowing life to unfold as it should. It also means learning how to show up to each and every moment fully present. Doing and being the best that you can in every situation, regardless of whether it’s a easy or challenging. How you do anything is how you do everything, so learn to show up full and give your all to every person and situation you find yourself in.

3) Stay positive.

Mindset is everything my friend, you have to stay positive. Yes, feel what you’re feeling and if you need to fall apart or get upset, that’s completely okay. Process whatever you’re feeling, but don’t let it consume your spirit and drag you down.

I’d love to hear from you!

Have you ever experienced this in your life? What was the situation and what did you end up learning or gaining that helped you get to exactly where you wanted to be? Maybe you’re experiencing this right now… if so, leave a comment below sharing where you’re at and what’s showing up in your life that you’re resisting.

I’ve had a lot of people ask me about my experience with RHH B-School and whether or not I’d recommend it. The short answer is HELL YES. It’s amazing and I highly recommend it. To hear more about why… keep reading. :) I’m also offering some very special packages to those who sign up using my affiliate link. Details below.

First… a little back story.

I came across Marie many years ago and won a ticket to her live event in 2010. While there, I got to listen to the amazing women who had participated in her mastermind program for the last year. I knew immediately, that this was a woman I HAD to work with. I applied and was accepted to her 2011 mastermind program.

Working directly with Marie and 20 other driven, beautiful and passionate female entrepreneurs completely changed my life and my business. Before this, I had a design business that wasn’t going anywhere. Sure, we did good work… but we weren’t growing and I wasn’t feeling fulfilled. Marie and the other mastermind ladies helped me not only discover what it is I’m truly passionate about, but help me build it into something profitable in under a year.

Part of being in her mastermind program was access to RHH B-School. I was THRILLED to be able to utilize this program… and let me tell you, it is just as amazing as it sounds. I’ve personally gone through B-School twice and fully intend to do it again this year. Every time I work through the program, I get even clearer on what I want to create in my business and who I want to serve. I also begin to grow at an amazing rate, personally and professionally. What’s better? The community is AMAZING. Seriously, I have never been connected to so many caring, supportive, inspiring and passionate individuals.

Onto the Q+A…

What is B-School?

Rich, Happy and Hot B-School is a virtual business course run by online marketing genius Marie Forleo. Marie is a phenomenal mentor, and I speak from personal experience having worked with her directly for almost a year. Even better, Marie walks the talk. She’s built a highly profitable business around what she LOVES, building every aspect of her unique personality into it. Not only does she encourage you to do the same (be YOU completely), she shows you exactly how to do it.

Who is B-School for?

B-School is for those that already have a business. However, I will say that if you’re planning to start one soon and you can afford the investment, GRAB IT NOW. We can focus on figuring out what your business is with one of my bonuses below. The tools in this program will serve you and your business for life, so I recommend grabbing it now and utilizing it when you’re ready. However, note that the content in this program assumes you already have a business.

Why do I recommend it?

Everything that I’ve done to build my business to what and where it is today is a direct result of what I learned in B-School. In 2011 I more than doubled my income and am on track to do it again this year. I launched my first online program, built a solid email list, got invited to blog for The Huffington Post and expect so much more amazing things to happen this year. B-School helped me get super clear on what my business is about, who my ideal clients and customers are, and how to BEST serve them.

If you think online marketing is icky, I promise you’re going to LOVE this program. Marketing is about communicating that you have a solution to the issues and problems that your ideal clients and customers have. It’s not about being salesy, tricky or anything like that… it’s about CONNECTION, and Marie understands and teaches exactly that.

I also highly recommend it for the community alone. The men and women that Marie attracts are inspiring, passionate, driven, caring and supportive. Have a question, need feedback or just want to know you’re not alone on this journey? The B-Schoolers in the online Facebook group have your back. Many B-Schoolers have built their business from this community alone, it’s phenomenal.

What’s included?

There’s so much goodness, I don’t even know where to begin. Marie has some talented friends and colleagues that provide amazing supplemental bonuses. Additionally here’s a look at the main modules:

Profit Clarity

Websites That Sell and Don’t Suck

Slam Dunk Communication Plan

List Building Mania

How to Create Products and Services That Practically Sell Themselves

Marketing Wisdom That Works Across Every Industry

Each week’s module is filled with step-by-step training videos, done-for-you templates, swipe files, resource lists and worksheets designed to knock your customers’ pants off (figuratively speaking, of course). Members will access the private B-School members’ site 24/7 to view the training videos, post their homework, ask questions and compare notes with classmates.

There are two implementation weeks where you can focus on doing the work in your business. Marie also does weekly coaching calls and additional strategic calls such as live website reviews which provide incredible insight into what really works.

“Every calling is great when greatly pursued.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes

You were put here for a reason. With your unique personality, skills, passions and point of view. You’re meant to do very unique work in this world. “And what’s that?”, you might be wondering… Show up and be YOU. Do what you’re called to do.

Follow your passions, speak your truth and leave your mark.

So many of us go through life with a clear sense (or maybe just a nagging feeling deep inside) that we’re not living up to our full potential. An understanding that there’s more to life than the 9-5 job, getting married, having kids and saving enough money for a comfortable retirement and some fun things to pass the time until we die.

Often, we think that “finding our purpose” means discovering some great calling or to do hugely important things in the world… you know, Mother Theresa and Martin Luther King, JR style. That’s simply not true.

We’re all put here with different personalities, passions and skills. If you feel called to make art, then you were put here to make art. If you feel called to write, record, build, design, speak or explore, then you were put here to do just that.

We have to find what lights us up, what we feel called to do, and do it.

With all the possibilities, desires and “shoulds,” it can be hard sometimes to make sense of what your TRUE calling is and what’s simply a fleeting desire or whim. Desires and whims are important and can be excellent tools in guiding you towards what you need next in your life, but it’s important to distinguish between the two.

Whim:

A sudden or capricious idea; a fancy. Arbitrary thought or impulse: governed by whim.

Calling:

A vocation, profession, or trade; a call or summons; a strong impulse or inclination.

How to distinguish between a calling and a whim.

1) A calling is magnetic and all consuming.

Callings draw you towards them. They start as a tiny nagging thought or feeling, then begin to consume your mind and drive your every day life. They can’t be ignored. You’ll feel a sense of urgency and a strong inclination to follow a calling whereas a whim is oftentimes fleeting.

Whims are impulsive and may feel as though they’ve come out of nowhere. Callings start deep inside of us, stirring and growing over time until they simply can’t be ignored any longer. Ignoring a strong calling will leave you feeling frustrated, unfulfilled, antsy and very discontent with your life and career if these things are out of alignment.

2) The CORE focus of a calling is always present.

If you feel called to care for animals, inspire healthy lifestyle changes in others or end global warming, that will always drive you, regardless of HOW you choose to act on it.

If you’re called to care for animals, you may be a veterinarian, create a nonprofit against factory farming, become a vegan health coach or even just foster shelter animals until they can find their forever homes. You may even do one or more of these in your lifetime, but the core of what calls you will always be present.

If you’re called to inspire healthy lifestyle changes in others, you may be a health coach, write a cookbook, start a gluten-free baked goods store or become a personal trainer. You may also just love to cook healthy meals, learn about organic urban farming and keep yourself in shape, effectively inspiring those around you to do the same. Inspiring change is always present.

Whims, on the other hand, vary greatly. There may be times you feel a desire to be active, social, rebellious or experimental, while other times you feel the desire to be still, go inside yourself or cut ties. They are necessary, but they are also temporary.

3) Callings are about contribution.

Whether you feel called to make art or change the course of global warming, all callings are about contributing to the world. Through your words, actions, presence and creations. This is why they matter.

Your views, experiences, voice and ideas are meant to be shared and your calling will align itself with some way to express these things, though the medium varies from person to person. Your calling is as unique as you are.

Whims are more selfish and focused on you. What YOU feel the desire or need to do for yourself in this moment. Achieving some desired feeling, experience, knowledge or connection. Whims feed and fuel us, allow us to rejuvenate our spirits and refill the well of ideas and inspiration, but they’re narrow by nature.

So, what’s calling you?

What drives you and everything you want to create in your life? What is the thing (or things) that matters MOST to you?

If you’re experiencing unhappiness or lack of fulfillment in your life, there’s a good chance that at some point, you lost sight of yourself. Maybe you met a boy who “tamed” your wild and creative soul. Maybe you went to school for something practical rather than following your whims and staying playful and spirited. Maybe you allowed yourself to give into peer pressure when you were younger in order to “fit in.”

Whatever it was, you lost yourself.

The quarter- and mid-life crisis happens because we choose to walk down a different path than the one that’s TRUE to ourselves. We get practical jobs, buy homes and cars, have children… “live the dream.”

And then one day we realize that we’re living a life completely out of line with our TRUTH and we freak the fug out. We think something along the lines of, “WHOA, this is NOT where I belong!”

So what happens after this moment? How do you FIND and KEEP yourself going forward?

Instead of looking at what’s missing, wrong or “lost” about you and your life… discover more of what’s already there.

Fact: You never really LOST yourself.

It’s true… you didn’t lose anything, you just tucked it away. Deep down inside yourself and covered it up with layers of what’s expected and what’s acceptable. With the things you thought you should do. What made sense was practical.

“Finding yourself” is more about removing all the layers of crap and less about trying to figure out what you’ve lost. It’s about stepping fully and completely into your truth, living your purpose and doing what LIGHTS YOU UP.

How to excavate your TRUTH:

1. Be inquisitive with yourself.

If something is so clearly wrong in your life, explore the why behind it, like a child. Why? Why? WHY? Why is this not right for me? WHY does this not feel like me? WHY do I want something different? WHY did I choose this in the first place and how was that not true to who I really am?

When you explore what’s not working and WHY, you begin to uncover what really matters and what you really want.

2. Listen to your tiny urges.

What’s been nagging at your heart lately? Do you feel a pull to dye your hair a crazy color or totally change things up? Maybe you want to wear 4″ heels out on the town despite having been a casual home body your whole life. Do you deeply desire creating art and having your own showing, despite having worked as a banker for years?

Tiny urges are there to guide you to your truth. The fact is, your purpose may not be to paint or become an artist, but the act of painting may allow your mind to shut off long enough for you to hear your truth. Getting out on the town in your high heels may give you back the energy and zest for life necessary to uncovering your purpose and making it happen.

Pick a tiny urge, get to work following it. You never know where it will lead!

3. Stop doing/seeing/being the things you know are wrong.

Just stop. Don’t spend another minute with the guy that’s not right for you. Don’t go to one more party with the “friends” you know you don’t fit in with. Stop wearing what you think you should. Stop saying what everyone wants to hear. Stop being someone you know you’re NOT.

STOPPING allows space for starting to do the things you really want to do. It allows the new great friends to show up in your life. The right guy to bump into you at the store. The room for you to speak your mind and become the person you ALREADY ARE, deep down.

Take Action Now

Tell me one way you’ve been untrue to yourself in the past or present. What steps will you take to discover more of your truth? To allow yourself to be YOU, all of the time?

skill (noun):
1. The ability to do something well; expertise.
2. A particular ability.

So many of us get extremely caught up in doing the things we’re good at. Maybe it’s a trade we learned from our parents growing up… maybe it’s what we were directed to go to college for and we have a degree plus years of experience under our belt.

Regardless, it’s not our passion.
This realization can cause a lot of confusion and heartache.

But I spent ___ years and thousands of dollars going to school for this.

This is the only way I know how to make money.

The thing I love to do can’t be a REAL career.

Everyone says I’m so great at this, I would be a fool to change paths.

Here’s the truth about “what you do best”:
You were given these strengths and skill sets as TOOLS, not necessarily to build your life around.

I’m a prime example of this… my skills, experience and “expertise” are in design and branding. I went to school for it, worked at many firms and agencies, even built a business of my own around it! But it’s not my PASSION. My passion is personal responsibility and I’m driven by the desire to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

I tried to find a logical way to incorporate the two… only work with non-profits or companies that try to make a difference, but the fact of the matter is, I was just NOT passionate about design on it’s own. It’s a talent, one that I wasn’t entirely sure why I had, until I realized it was a tool to do far greater work in the world… and NOT necessarily in an obvious way.

Yes, I have the ability to create a beautiful and strong brand for everything I do… but my experience with branding also allows me to help people define their why, values and vision for life, then help them ensure all life areas are consistent with this vision. I’m able to see where people are out of alignment with what they claim to believe and desire in their life.

Let’s look at how you can do this with your life…

How to Connect Your Passion and Skills

1. Make a Transferable Skills List

The first step towards building a life around your passion, while incorporating your skills and strengths, is to take a look at how they integrate with one another. At first it can be incredibly difficult to make a connection… take my story as an example. How on earth does graphic design and personal development work together?

Start by making a list of all the skills that you’ve developed or honed as a result of your education, training and experience. Think of as MANY as possible. In my case, not only did I have all the skills and experience of design, I learned a TON about running a business, bookkeeping, customer service, working with vendors, pitching, sales, printing and so much more. I gained the tools necessary to build a SOLID business doing what I love and a different perspective on how to teach it to my audience. Additionally, my personal experience in building a life I didn’t love drives the work that I do for others.

Once you have your list, take a look and see what’s transferable to your passion. What skills can you use to build a career, business or life around what you REALLY love? Get creative, sometimes the answer is not always obvious or conventional.

2. Reframe Your Situation

Many times you may experience feelings of guilt or shame around the fact that you went to school, trained or spent years of your life following your skills, not your passion. Before you can move forward with what you love, you have to release those feelings and reframe the situation.

First of all, you would not have ended up doing whatever you’ve been doing without those natural skills and talents… there is a reason you spent time in the field you did and not another. Even if you were shoved into a profession that felt completely out of your skill set, you likely landed in a position that was fitting on some level.

Instead of viewing this as wasted time, work to see it as time spent honing your skills and talents in a different way. Having a unique perspective on how to do things will prove to be invaluable as you pursue your passion. No matter what you’ve been doing, it WILL serve you as you in the years to come. Look to positively reframe your situation constantly. There’s no sense wasting time in that negative space!

3. Dabble in Your Delights

Don’t think that because you spent years as a lawyer you can’t “waste time” painting. Or that you have no business building a life around working with kids when all you’ve done for the past decade of your life is crunch numbers and push papers.

You’re drawn to what you’re drawn to for a reason… don’t over think it! DO WHAT YOU LOVE. Do what you deeply desire to do. The things that light you up, fascinate you and feels right. Feelings should always win out over thoughts.

If you feel like you want to paint and be an artist… paint and be an artist. Don’t worry about the thoughts that tell you it’s silly, childish, random or a waste of time. Don’t THINK that you should be focusing on that big promotion when you don’t LOVE what you do. Put energy into what you love to do, not what you do because you can.

Take Action Now

Share with me at least one skill that you’ve honed doing whatever it is that you do that could be utilized if you follow your passion. If you’re not sure what you’re really passionate about yet, share with me one thing that you desire to do and how you plan to start incorporating it into your life THIS WEEK.

What the heck is purpose anyways?

To some, the word lights a fire in their belly because they truly understand what it means to live life with a purpose or calling. Others will cringe at the word… what a silly word, purpose. They doubt that everyone (including themselves) has a purpose or that things really do happen for a reason.

I believe that absolutely everything, including the awful, happens for a reason.

To enlighten us… or those we leave behind.

To force us to change our ways… a catalyst for growth.

To shape us into the people we’re meant to be… so that we can live our purpose.

You really do have a purpose, and it’s simply this:

Be you. Totally and completely. Fully expressed at ALL times.

When you’re just you, living that authentic self FULL OUT, it’s impossible to live a life off purpose. You do the things that you love and are skilled at. You spend time with the people you’re supposed to be with (because those who aren’t supposed to be in your life fall away). You travel to the places that you’re meant to be. And naturally, you begin to pursue your passions.

Ask yourself this:

If you didn’t have to please or worry about anyone else, what would you do? If money was no concern, how would you spend your time? Where would you be? With whom?

Don’t roll your eyes at these questions because you’ve heard them a million times… there’s a reason for that. It’s EYE-OPENING when you take the time to honestly look inside your heart to discover your truth.

Many times this questions is avoided out of FEAR. Fear that the life you have now isn’t the one you really want. Fear that the person you’re with, the friends or the tribe is actually steering you further from your truth. Fear that if you answer honestly, it will mean you have to DO SOMETHING about it.

Humor me… take some time with this question. Sit with it. Feel what bubbles up for you… what visions flash into your mind. Where your wildest fantasies take you. Discovering your truth requires honesty with yourself! And don’t worry, it doesn’t mean you have to throw everything away or start over.

Make an effort to simply know yourself and what you truly desire.

At a total loss?

Three simple ways to begin to discover your purpose:

1. Start following your tiny urges.

Do you really want to paint? Play guitar? Try some fancy new recipe? Have you been secretly dying to learn salsa or maybe even take a pole dancing class? Whatever your tiny little urge… indulge it. Take a class, buy the tools and try something that will begin to move you in the direction of what you REALLY want to do.

Nothing is too random, crazy or silly. If you have the urge, follow it! It will lead you into amazing new territory and allow you to get to know yourself on a deep level.

2. Be completely honest, ALL of the time.

Whether it’s with your friends, family or yourself, be totally honest about EVERYTHING. Don’t just agree with what everyone else is saying or doing. Don’t say you’ll do one thing when you really don’t want to or you’d rather do something else. Explore your truth.

Be honest with your words AND your actions… the purchases you make, clothes you chose to wear and things you decide to do. Your actions reflect your truth as strongly as your words. Begin to be honest and express that through everything you do.

Start small, but be confident in who you are and what you believe.

3. Realize you are the ONLY PERSON who knows what’s best.

Input can be phenomenal, but oftentimes we rely too heavily on our friends or family when making decisions. Before we know it, we don’t feel as if we can truly be ourselves because we’re so concerned about the approval of others. Don’t hand your power to someone else.

As much as they love you, these people’s assistance can sometimes hinder your ability to find and follow your purpose. They want only the best for you, and their actions can come from a place of protection… which is not always congruent with total support.

If you feel like something is right for you, then you need to trust your intuition!

Take Action Now!

Leave a comment below sharing some things you discovered about yourself when you honestly answered the questions above!

“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” Howard Thurman

Pssst! If you’re ready to dig deep and take an honest look at your life, discover what you REALLY want and make an easy-to-implement action plan to make it happen FAST, then my new program Foundations for Unshakable Joy is for you!

Having a solid personal brand has a lot to do with knowing where you’re coming from in life.

Not what part of the country you’re from, how you were raised or where you went to college. The place “where you come from” has more to do with what you value and believe as well as your mission in life and what you wish to achieve. Really understanding those things will help you act from of a place of certainty and direction in all facets of your life.

Having a natural knack for noticing inconsistencies, I feel constantly aware of how often people contradict themselves. You’ll run a red arrow but not make an illegal U-Turn. You stress working out and eating clean, yet you smoke cigarettes every day. You attend church on a regular basis, yet you download illegally and burn copies of things you didn’t pay for. Do you see where I’m going with this? You pick and choose when to be consistent with what you claim to be your own values.

The personal brand that I am currently working to build for myself is one that follows the mantra of “be the best, healthiest and happiest you™.” As I’ve said before, to me this means that I am as green as I can possibly be, I am positively contributing to others and the world through everything that I do, I am healthy and fit both mentally and physically and I am working to live true to my mission statement.

When I made the decision that this would be my personal brand, I discovered a lot of projects and life practices that were inconsistent with the message I wished to send. This disheartened me a bit because they are things that I love… things that include a classic car that probably doesn’t get more than 15 mpg (though once it did get in the 20s on a road trip), an arts and craft project that was being made from non-recycled materials and really just creating more junk in the world, a business that simply focused on using design as a means to make money and a project dear to my heart (soon to be announced!) that I couldn’t really figure out how it fit within my mission.

I’m happy to report that I’ve since discovered ways that not only allow me to keep these things as a part of my life and my personal brand, but I am more excited about them than I was before! I want to share these in the near future as examples of what I intend to do as I grow my brand. My goal with this is to help others realize that you can keep doing what you’re doing in life while, with a few tweaks, making it consistent with being the best, healthiest and happiest person that you can possibly be.

Do you know where you’re coming from in life?
Can you admit to an area that you’re inconsistent in?

Be the Best, Healthiest and Happiest You™

Personal branding is essential for any individual
that wants to build a consistent and focused life.

Before this past year or so of serious soul searching and personal growth, I would have believed that things like mission statements and personal branding should be limited to companies and public figures. Now, I realize that it’s essential for building a consistent and focused life.

By creating a mission statement you learn how to hone in on your passions and purpose while setting a clear, overall goal for your life. A driving force for everything that you do. I believe it is the most important step in building your personal brand and building the life that you want to live. If you want to be the Best, Healthiest and Happiest You™, you have to understand what that means to you.

“My mission is to use my mind and creativity, through businesses, art, writing and leading by example, to teach and inspire personal responsibility and gratitude in others, along with the goal of becoming the best, healthiest and happiest person they can possibly be.” Stephenie Zamora

My mission statement defines the person that I want to be, what I want to accomplish and through what methods I plan to do that. By understanding these things, I am able to build my life accordingly. If being the best, happiest and healthiest me means I am as green as I can be, I am giving back to the world, I am fit, healthy, active and I am working to inspire others towards these same goals–that means that my companies and projects, my actions and my words reflect this.

I am currently working on building my personal brand and extending my core values into all facets of my life while working to live my mission statement. It is a concept that I wish to share further with you as I believe it’s essential. Please be sure to keep an eye out for upcoming posts around personal branding and creating your mission statement!

Please, share your thoughts on the subject in the comments section.

Do you have a mission statement? What does personal branding mean to you?

Be the Best, Healthiest and Happiest You™
